I personally don’t think that KIC 8462852, the star Kepler discovered with still-unexplained properties, has some sort of Dyson object/swarm around it. More level-headed astronomers suggested that a cloud of comets might actually be the explanation, but one compelling piece of evidence against the comet theory was from old photographic plates of the star from Earth which appeared to show it dimming slowly over time.

Unfortunately, it looks like that dimming probably didn’t happen. A new study by Michael Hippke suggests that what the original proponent of the idea behind the dimming, Bradly Schaefer, actually saw was a steady advance in technology and resolution which made the star appear to dim, but actually just showed it with increasing accuracy.
